Heart Mendings

Last night I sat down with Christina as she flipped through the book of an artist she really likes. The main theme of the drawings & illustrations revolved around hearts – giving your heart to someone; having your heart ripped out of you by someone; wondering if you’ll ever get your heart back again. Some of the men and women, boys and girls, seemed willing; others were beaten and sad; yet others had resilience in their eyes. I headed home after our visit (yummy burrito hour, sit-on-the-floor time, storybook hour) and popped in the next episode of Felicity (which I’m currently re-watching). And what episode was it? The Twilight Zone-inspired episode, filmed in black-and-white, about Felicity’s devilish encounters with the doctor, nurse, victims, and potential victims of The Clinic, where a “new procedure” allows them to cut your heart right out of you once you’ve had it broken by love. You’re able to keep on living, but you won’t be tempted to fall in love again, give into romantic ideals, or allow yourself to trust anyone ever again. While the end of the episode has its own dark twist, Felicity did escape the evil of The Clinic – without giving into the procedure. Her heart's intact, ready to take chances again.
