Sentence of the Day

"It might be too that the curtains had not been drawn from the window since some preceding summer, and if one crossed there now and pulled them aside, opening the creaking shutters, a dead moth who had been imprisoned behind them for many months would fall to the carpet and lie there, beside a forgotten pin, and a dried leaf blown there before the windows were closed for the last time."

Quote of the Day

"In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out.
It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being.
We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit."

~Albert Schweitzer

Snubbed

I'm thinking of boycotting the Oscars this year. Seriously. I feared that Sam Rockwell would not be nominated for Best Supporting Actor for The Way, Way Back, and -- alas -- I am correct.

Dear Academy: What were you thinking? Rockwell is spot-on, transcendent even, as Owen, the sage-like slacker with a heart of gold who mentors young Duncan through a painful yet ultimately illuminating phase of adolescence one summer at a water park.

Want to check out more Sam Rockwell? I recommend starting with Lawn Dogs, which captures a parallel brilliant performance: Poor, down-on-his-luck Trent navigates class wars and moral injustices at his landscaping job in a gated community while inspiring a young girl to break away from suburban mold sameness and stay true to her spirit and imagination.

Revelation

Have you checked out Bates Motel? Inspired largely by Twin Peaks, creators from both Lost and Friday Night Lights came together on cable's A&E network to offer this twisty modern-day prequel to Psycho. Things kick off with Mama Norma and Son Norman -- Bates, of course! -- moving to the quirky small town of White Pine Bay, Oregon after the mysterious death of Norman's father. Guess what kind of business Norma buys in foreclosure so she can start a new life for her and her son? I'm only four episodes in, and White Pine Bay may give Twin Peaks a run for its money with the number of buried secrets -- and corpses.

I don't use the term "revelation" lightly when it comes to actors, but Vera Farmiga is just that in this show. At once sexy, crazy, deviant, compassionate, ferocious, clever, vulnerable, and mysterious, she moves fluidly between emotions, manipulating those around her while sometimes letting her raw, true cracks show. Vera Farmiga *is* this character; she fully inhabits body, mind, and spirit. I can't stop watching her.

p.s. No worries, Freddie Highmore -- you're perfectly cast too.

Passage of the Day

"They walked home side by side. Oskar had a plan. They were going to enter into a pact together. If they entered into a pact together, Eli would become healthy. A magical thought, inspired by the books he had read. But magic...surely there was a little magic in the world. The people who denied the existence of magic, they were the ones that it went badly for."

Veronica Mars - 1st trailer released!

You heard it here first! (Well, maybe not, but still.)

The Veronica Mars movie trailer has been released. I believe it's the first, to be followed by another closer to the March 14th release in theaters.

I really like it...and I'm curious if the next trailer will capture the darker angles of the story, like in the TV show.

Quote of the Day

I'm not sure if I've posted this in the past. Courtesy of my friend Len, I give you...

"Never once in my life did I ask God for success or wisdom or power or fame. I asked for wonder, and he gave it to me."
